Wow, looking at my last post about getting my A7r being from November 2013, I feel almost ashamed knowing it is now early/mid October 2014 as I sit down to write this. Saying that, admittedly I was already starting to fall behind last year… I still have many great shots from a trip to Melbourne in October last year and a second lot from our trip to Margaret river last year amongst others from Nick and Kaylene’s wedding which we shot the video for etc. etc.. haha
I will have to get around to doing belated posts for some of these, I intend to make an effort to get back to more regular content on here.

Winding out 2013 was a turbulent time I remember thinking as I was going through it. After going on a quick work trip to Melbourne to learn about some new technologies for work. I was quickly into the Christmas rush mad time upon arrival and lost much of my spare time for the next couple of months. My band was booked to play a big show with lots of promo at one of Perth’s premier venues, a show called Academy at The Amplifier Bar. It was flat out busy but it was all looking up. I even had two new custom shop 8 string guitars I had ordered that were close to finally arriving. When one night while working back late at work, I got a phone call from Cameron the bass player for my band From Isolation. He had called to inform me that there had been complications with his fiance’s pregnancy to their second son, and that he would be unable to perform at the big show coming up at Academy. Of course I went into damage control, rang around and quickly organized a friend who said they were happy to give it a go and learn the tracks to help us out for this one show. Over the next few days and discussion between the band we decided to just pull out of the show, though it was disappointing, we felt there would be other opportunities in the future and we would be best served taking a break for two weeks over Christmas. We would reset and prepare to come back in 2014 with our new tracks and a new mission to forge forward once again.
To me while not the perfect end to the year of 2013, it certainly was looking up to be a great way start to the new year of 2014. We had a nice two week break to enjoy Christmas with our families(and I got to play more with my new camera.), the two new recordings were nearing completion of mixing and mastering, and my two new custom shop 8 strings were to arrive the week that the band returned to regular rehearsals in preparation for the new year. It was all looking up, 2014 was going to be a great year for us…
…two days before our first rehearsal back I received a phone call from Matt informing me that his wife was in fact pregnant and he would be withdrawing from the band to focus on family, minutes after this call I received a similar call from Seth informing me that he too was withdrawing from the band to focus on his new young family… My custom shop 8 strings had arrived the day prior…
Finding ourselves now without a vocalist and drummer, Cameron and I quickly realized we were up a creek without a paddle. We quickly resumed advertising for new members but even as of now, few have been forthcoming and willing. The ideas are still there if we find people who are willing, but for now the band is unfortunately still on hiatus. I have been working most the year on basically finishing the two tracks we had been recording to release as demos, so as not to have wasted all my time and effort on producing them. They are pretty much ready for release as of now, I am just finalizing some visuals to go with the first track prior to release. It will be good to at least see some of my hard work go out, even if not quite in the finished state I had hoped when initially undertaking the recordings.
Lisa and I still ran a tour show for Balls Deep earlier in the year with our promo company Metal For Fishes. I took some great live shots with my A7r with voigtlander 35mm f1.4 and off camera flashes. I also did an official band shoot for Arkarion’s new record. I got even more heavily into shooting film, doing all the dev at home and scanning myself, lots of experimentation, both success and failures. I need to do lots of posts for these, from playing with old expired 135 to fresh 135 b&w using modern digital lenses, to playing more with the linhof with sheet film and even more play with the mamiya 645 super. I got commissioned to shoot a live show for King Onion more recently, more work with the a7r voigtlander 35mm f1.4 and off camera flashes. Plus I have also more recently been playing shooting slide film and even developing my own e6, all whilst sometimes dragging Lisa along and getting her to play with a bit of film here and there too.
So as you can see we have kept ourselves busy creatively even while life has been throwing us curve balls, like back in February when we were informed the rental we had occupied for the last decade would be sold very quickly. After much stress and negotiation we in fact ended up purchasing the house and have stayed. haha. It has been a huge crazy year at work too, luckily all the extra overtime required has played right into our unexpected house purchase. Through all of this stress and even some goading from others, like the gentlemen from our Perth photographers group who took it upon himself to tell me how crap my work was and how he and mates laugh at me behind my back as they feel my work is only the quality of iphone shots, I have still kept going out and creating… I guess I just retracted from online for many months due to sheer busyness and perhaps even an apprehension to putting myself out there for judgment by others. Now my two brothers have too decided to leave the country indefinitely as they are over things here, so maybe it is time for me to throw more caution to the wind myself…
Either way it is about time I start to pick up the ball and start putting my self back out there, I cannot let things get to me and hide under a rock forever right? I will start trying to catch up by doing posts related to all the work I have not posted over the last 12 months. I look forward to catching up and continuing with creating and sharing with you guys, I too do hope that you enjoy following along with my experiments and exploration as I move forward into the future.
Please do keep checking back as I really will be working towards picking things back up and putting myself back out there. I will most probably next post about my most recent exploration into e6 slide film and home development and scanning.
I can’t wait to share with you all again soon, sorry for the length of this post but I felt I needed to get this out there, even though this just only glazes over the top and does not touch on soo much of the work I have to share. Thank you for taking the time to read if you did and I look forward to your continued readership and support.
